Choosing a Solana Wallet
A practical guide to hot wallets, hardware wallets, and browser extensions for Solana — focused on security trade-offs.

Your wallet is how you hold keys, sign transactions, and interact with programs on Solana. Choosing one is less about features and more about matching your security needs to how you plan to use the network.
Hot wallets vs cold storage
A hot wallet runs on a device connected to the internet — typically a browser extension or mobile app. It is convenient for frequent transactions but exposes your keys to whatever compromises that device.
A cold wallet (usually a hardware device) keeps keys offline. You connect it only when signing, which reduces exposure but adds steps to every transaction.
For most beginners, a hot wallet is fine for learning and small amounts. Once you hold meaningful value, a hardware wallet becomes worth the investment.
Browser extensions
Extensions like Phantom and Solflare integrate directly with websites that request signatures. They are easy to set up and widely supported. The main risk is phishing — malicious sites can request signatures for transactions you do not intend. Always verify the URL and read transaction details before approving.
Mobile wallets
Mobile apps offer portability and often include built-in browsers for decentralised applications. They share the same phishing risks as extensions. Enable biometric locks and keep your device software updated.
Hardware wallets
Devices from Ledger and Trezor store keys on a secure chip. You confirm transactions on the device screen, which prevents malware on your computer from altering what you sign. The trade-off is cost (typically £50–£150) and the extra step of connecting the device.
Seed phrases: the universal backup
Regardless of wallet type, you will receive a seed phrase — usually 12 or 24 words — during setup. This phrase can recreate your wallet on any compatible app. If you lose it, no one can recover your funds. Store it offline, on paper or metal, in a location separate from your device.
Never photograph your seed phrase or store it in cloud notes.
What we recommend for learners
Start with a reputable browser extension to follow tutorials and explore. Keep only what you are willing to lose in that wallet. When you are comfortable, book our Wallet Security Briefing to review your setup before moving larger amounts.
